6 Things I’ve Learned Leading a Team That Gets Results

I’ve been a part of iThemes for nearly 9 years now. Cory Miller and I have been friends a lot longer than that, and he was the person that originally convinced me that I should check out this Internet thing and put up a website. In 2008, when he and I sat in a burger joint and he showed me how to use WordPress for the first time, I could have never imagined how impactful that moment would be on the next decade of my life. I fairly promptly dropped out of college to work with Cory full time – and it’s been one hell of a ride.

I’ve served in several roles at iThemes over the years. At a certain point, Cory came to me and said that he thought the team had grown large enough that I needed a more formal leadership role. In 2011, I became the Chief Operating Officer. For at least the first year, I didn’t even know what that meant. I joked that it mostly meant I was a fire fighter, stomping out problems internally and with customers. That was fitting, seeing how I had plenty of experience starting fires in our organization. But over time, I grew in to my role as a leader. And through trial, error, and guidance, I actually got fairly decent at it. Read More →

I am extremely grateful for the opportunities I have be blessed with, and wanted to take the opportunity to fill some people in on how all of this came to be.

My junior year of college, while I was Colorado skiing with Cory and some friends, Cory first brought up the idea of me coming to work for iThemes. At the time, iThemes was in need of someone to help respond to sales emails. I had a little bit of experience with WordPress (meaning I had broken a few sites, and begged Cory to help me fix them), and Cory thought I could help lighten the load of sales emails. Read More →

Headshots of Cory Miller, iThemes CEO

I love the opportunity to get back in the studio. Fortunately, I work with some awesome folks that love to do cool things, so they don’t mind hanging out and taking photos.

Last week, I had the chance to shoot (more) photos of Cory Miller, and I wanted to share a few of them with you. Read More →

Choosing the Right Twitter Profile Pic

This may seem like a strange topic for me to be writing about, but it is one that drives me crazy. Not all Twitter profile pics are equal. There are different types; some good, some bad. To start, let’s go over a few of the basic types of twitter profile pics: (please note: If I used your twitter picture on this, don’t hate me. I may very well love you, I just needed some evidence.) Tale of a SXSW Rookie

At the end of this week I will be heading down to Austin, TX with some of the iThemes team to go to SXSW. This is my first time to be there, so I am pretty excited to take in all that SXSW has to offer.

Heading down with me are three other members of the iThemes/WebDesign.com team: Cory Miller, James Dalman, and adBrad Ulrich. Read More →
